I have experimented with different shapes and found that most people like the traditional surfboard shaped skimboard.  The rectangular and round boards skim beautifully, they just aren't as cool looking as the double pointed style boads. If you are building a board for a small child, I will usually recommend the round board. They are just easier to use and the child will be skimming in a very short time.
